2 Step Authentication

You can add an extra layer to your Gmail account by setting up 2 step authentication by logging into your Google Account and selecting “2-Step Verification”. This will add an extra security step during log in that would consist of: receiving verification codes on secure devices or using security keys.

1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security to your Gmail account by enabling 2FA. This typically requires a code sent to your phone or generated by an app, in addition to your password, making it much harder for unauthorized users to access your account.
2. Regularly Update Your Password: Change your Gmail password periodically and ensure it's strong, with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessable information like your name or birthdate.
3. Review and Manage Third-Party App Access: Periodically review the third-party apps and services that have access to your Gmail account. Revoke access for any apps you no longer use or trust.
4. Use Gmail's Confidential Mode: When sending sensitive information via email, use Gmail's Confidential Mode. This feature allows you to set an expiration date for emails and prevents recipients from forwarding, copying, or printing the message.
5. Enable Advanced Protection: Google offers an Advanced Protection Program for users who require heightened security. This includes additional safeguards like blocking unauthorized access to your account and preventing suspicious downloads.
6. Regularly Review Account Activity: Keep an eye on your Gmail account activity to detect any unauthorized access. Google provides a detailed overview of recent account activity, including logins, device types, and locations.
7. Disable Email Forwarding: Prevent unauthorized access to your emails by disabling email forwarding. This ensures that your emails can only be accessed from your primary Gmail account.
8. Beware of Phishing Attempts: Be cautious of emails requesting sensitive information or urging urgent action. Phishing emails often mimic legitimate messages from trusted sources to trick users into revealing personal information or login credentials.
9. Encrypt Emails with Sensitive Information: For added security, consider encrypting emails containing sensitive information using tools like PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) or S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions).
10. Regularly Update Security Settings: Stay informed about Gmail's security features and regularly review and update your security settings to ensure you're taking advantage of the latest protections and enhancements.
